SBSM exhibits STEAM and takes coding and robotics to ISF

The world of education is advancing. Coding, LEGO and robotics are becoming a new era for learning. Taking into consideration the new dimension in Technology and education, SBSM hosted their first STEAM exhibition on 6 April 2019. The event was aimed at promoting public awareness and an understanding of the importance of Science and Technology in education.  STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics to solve real-world problems through hands-on learning activities and creative designs.

The exhibition was well attended by the Lenasia community and many learners and educators from other schools that participated in the fun activities and competitions. The competitions consisted Science, Arts, engineering and Coding categories.

Mumtaz Mia, the director of Eskom young scientists used the STEAM exhibition as a platform for earmarking potential projects for the district and regional competitions.

SBSM is proud to announce that a grade 10 learner Viresh Soogreem was one of the learners that was selected to take part in the Eskom science fair for young scientists.

Viresh took 1st position in the engineering category for his ‘icare robotics’ model at the regional competition held at the Soweto UJ campus on the 20 July 2019.  He is currently preparing for his exciting journey at the ISF (international Science Fair) competition to be held in September 2019.

In keeping with the STEM/STEAM education of coding and robotics, SBSM took on the ESKOM challenge and also received the ‘best innovation award’.

SBSM is proud of the achievements and dedication of its’ learners and educators while  engaging with the new curriculum within the Science and Technology field.
